Welcome to DC CleanTech

I launched DC CleanTech to develop a body of knowledge 100% dedicated to the intersection of clean energy, public policy, and government finance.

Once a niche investment class, cleantech has gone mainstream.  According to the International Energy Agency, global cleantech investments will hit more than $2 trillion in 2024, doubling global investments in coal, gas and oil. Here in the United States, the Solar Energy Industry Association reports that solar accounted for 75% of new electricity-generating capacity added to the U.S. grid in the first quarter of 2024!

But like any tightly regulated, infrastructure-linked sector, cleantech continues to be highly impacted by government action (or inaction). From the battles over congressional appropriations and permitting reform, to the recent Supreme Court rulings, to the implementation of the Inflation Reduction Act and the imposition of tariffs on clean energy goods and supply chains, clean energy R&D, deployment, and financing are inextricably linked to the federal government policy process.

Even during my time in government, I struggled to find all the information I wanted or needed in one place about government cleantech financing awards and opportunities - information that’s valuable to policy makers, investors, and technology developers. DC CleanTech is a one-stop-shop for government funding awards, opportunities to engage in the government policy process, and news related to the intersection of policy, government finance, and clean energy. I’d love to hear from you about ideas for the site and newsletter, and ways we can keep the conversation going!

David Kovatch

I’ve spent the past three Presidential Administrations at the Department of Energy and the White House developing and implementing policies to establish and finance clean energy deployment and supply chains and enhance national security.

Currently, I serve as the Head of DC Office at Mission Strategies, a clean energy boutique government affairs consulting firm focused on facilitating the deployment of technologies and infrastructure in support of advanced energy systems.  The Mission Strategies bipartisan team work with clients across the clean energy sector to execute on their federal priorities and ensure enacted laws, regulations, tax, and funding programs are implemented in furtherance of their objectives.
